What is Guided Meditation?

Guided meditation will walk you through the steps of relaxation. Often the guide will begin by telling you to close your eyes. They will walk you through the steps to help your body reach a place of relaxation so that your mind is able to connect and relax. Once you have reached a state of relaxation they will help to walk you through some meditative exercises such as visualization. At the end of a session a good practitioner will always encourage you to write down thoughts related to your experience.

Try a few sessions

Having a few sessions of guided meditation can help to set you up so that you can achieve meditation on your own. However, some people find that they not only like to meditate at home by themselves, they also prefer to continue participating in a guided meditation group. Others may find that the group environment doesn’t work well with them even though they have great success with guided meditation. For these folks there are recorded guided meditations that can be found all over the internet. Some are free and are found easily through a quick search engine search. Others can be found through meditation center websites. If neither of those options works best for you, there are a number of different formats in which guided meditations can be found for purchase or even rented from your library.

Guided meditation is encouraged by mental health professionals as a form of self-care. Through the use of a journal to help you keep track of how you feel, guided meditation has been shown to help with lowering stress, improving asthma attacks, help with pain management, help you develop coping skills including the ability to carry out tasks during stressful situations, control anger, and alleviate anxiety.
