Astral projection is the action of willingly separating the soul from the body. It is considered an out of body experience or OBE. The practitioner remains attached to their body via a silver cord. Many are able to see the cord when projecting. While astral projecting you experience things anywhere in the universe outside of your body, able to consciously remember them. Astral projecting is not lucid dreaming, however. What happens in an astral projection actually occurs, while lucid dreaming only happens in the world of dreams.
Robert Monroe: The Father of Astral Projection
There are two main fields of thought on astral projection the first the phasing model defined by Robert Monroe. Monroe held the belief that it was impossible to actually separate the soul from the body and that instead of being an actual separation astral projection took the soul to a different plane of consciousness much like changing radio stations. The other is the mystical model which absolutely believes that the soul leaves the body but remains connected. The silver cord connecting the soul to the body transfers energy from the physical to the etheric body so that the astral projection is able to travel as far and as long as it would like. Performing an astral projection requires practice, though some people are naturals. Begin by finding a comfortable place where you can lay back and relax. Many people recommend practicing astral projection first thing in the morning before you get out of bed as the state of drowsiness helps the body to relax and the mind to be more willing to enter a meditative state. Be sure to cover your body with a blanket no matter what time you practice as the act of the soul leaving the body often leaves the physical body feeling cold which can affect your ability to project. Stretch out and try to relax. You want to achieve a state of complete relaxation of both the mind and the body. Try flexing and loosening your muscles, beginning with your feet or hands, working your way through each of the muscle groups until you are fully relaxed. Practice deep breathing techniques, making sure that the chest and shoulders are completely relaxed.
Because vibrations are a natural part of astral projection, consider using a quartz crystal to help raise your natural vibrations and make it easier to achieve projection. Hold the crystal at the third eye between the eyebrows. Remember, high vibrations help to ward off any negative energy. As you prepare to leave the body you will feel vibrations coming in various frequencies and in waves. Don’t be afraid of these vibrations, succumb to them or you could be prevented from entering the meditative state necessary for astral projection.
As you approach a hypnagogic state, don’t allow yourself to fall asleep. Hold yourself just on the edge of sleep and begin to picture your hand or foot. Focus on the body part until you can visualize it perfectly with your eyes closed and continue focusing until all other thoughts fall away. Then, flex the image of your hand or foot, not the actual limb itself. Continue doing this until it feels like they are physically moving. Spread your focus to other parts of your body until it feels as though you’re moving your whole body in just your mind. Now you will want to imagine the room in which you are lying. Move your body in your mind to stand up and look around. Get up off the bed and walk across the room, turn around and look at your body. If you are able to do this you have successfully achieved astral projection and an OBE or out of body experience.
