While astrology and your horoscope may seem miles away from a deck of beautifully illustrated tarot cards, tarot and astrology often go hand in hand. Better still, you can use tarot to help gain deeper insight into an astrology horoscope reading. Each of the signs has a tarot card that represents them and this card. In addition to the rest of the deck, this can provide deeper insights and meaning into what your horoscope has to say. Knowing the influence of certain tarot cards on your astrological sign can help you make a more in-depth assessment of a tarot reading. However, it’s important to realize that not every card in a tarot deck has a relationship with your zodiac sign or the sign of anyone else.

When completing a tarot reading, don’t go against your intuition. To really get a full, in depth picture of yourself a combination of astrology and tarot can be the way to go. In this way, its a look at the planets, zodiac signs, the elements, and then of course the names and numbers of the cards. The royal court cards combine two different elements and two different qualities as well as the zodiac signs next to one another. This starts with Aries and Fire, then ends with Pisces and Water, which creates the full circle. The suit cards, which are the easiest to remember, are decanates of each zodiac sign. They run 10 degrees each, 30 degrees total per zodiac sign, for a total of 360 degrees.

Royal court cards are the King, Queen, Knight (Prince), and Page (Princess). The Suit cards are Ace and then two through ten. There are three qualities: cardinal, fixed, and mutable. There are four elements, fire (wands), earth (pentacles), air (swords), and water (cups).

High Level Overview

Tarot cards and their Astrological connections were first combined by Hermetic order of Golden Dawn. Origins of both date way back. Tarot was reimagined into what we know today during Renaissance period, whereas astrology is a system that has been in place pre-Christianity and mostly at its basic structural level unchanged. Planets were then added as they were discovered. New ways of using the system have been a big part of its growth and continued popularity. The major connections are with the Major Arcana. Then the astrological concept is applied and broken down further in Minor Arcana by an elemental grouping. Each astrological sign has Tarot card association.

SIGN GROUPS
Wands: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Pentacles: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
Swords: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Cups: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

These are two tools working from the same energy source in a harmony that can’t be denied. With a deeper look into it all, we can see that despite having been created separately they work together perfectly. Each sign has 2 tarot cards that completely compliment the energy already present in zodiac signs. There are 4 suits and 4 elements. This creates the ability for them together to tell deeper story than they could alone. There are three zodiac signs per element. Each suit loosely conveys what each of court cards are preoccupied with, with what care about, what bring to world and where skills lie.

Knowing how the Tarot and Zodiac sign link allows you to be informed on your purpose in life. How the Tarot cards represent zodiac signs can be important because cards serve as archetypes that help us understand central themes, transits, and people in our lives. If they show up in a reading, it suggests we embody this archetype to come into our power. Zodiac’s corresponding tarot card is like their mascot.

Tarot is the story that follows the blank slate of the fool, the other systems and frameworks lies within. To get the more in depth reading, combining with horoscopes and the zodiac are necessary. It is not possible to truly understand yourself unless you understand the whole. The associations in the zodiac help ground you in the larger system of magic, similar to elementals. It’s a map for the bigger picture with a place for all. Life is messy but knowing where each piece fits helps understand pieces and what they mean. It is important to understand the card and the relationships to each other.

COURT CARDS

Each court card ranks selves with different elements/unique combination of two different elements. Loosely, the rank element symbolizes personality and approach, while the court card takes in day to day life.

KINGS (Cardinal/Fixed)
Wands: Water & Fire
Pentacles: Fire & Earth
Swords: Earth & Air
Cups: Air & Water

This role uses their powers of suit to create external change. They mastered it for a practical use, unlike the queen, who has mastered it by understanding. Kings are usually quite balanced in the way that they handle situations with a knowledge of how their suit affects others, both in positive and negative ways. Kings associated with Air are described as executors of element, level headed and intellectual. Approach things with clarity of mind. Must be strategic in order to make sure their vision comes to life, and great communicators, must be in order to share their vision of what the world can be with others.

Mutable signs that end seasons; they are described as adaptable, flexible, rebellious.

King of Wands: passionate, courageous, brave, energetic, funny, leader.

King of Cups: caring, creative, spiritual, big hearted, warm but in control of his emotions.

King of Swords: rational, communicative, disciplined, distant or aloof, careful in showing feelings

King of Pentacles: hard working, generous, financially stable, provider, family oriented

QUEENS (Mutable/Cardinal)
Wands: Water & Fire
Pentacles: Fire & Earth
Swords: Earth & Air
Cups: Air & Water

You need a deep understanding of this suit. Unlike the kings, who use their knowledge of their suit to act on the world, the queens use it to develop their inner self. They have a mature understanding of both the strengths and weaknesses of their suit and are able, through quiet reflection and gentle expression, to help others see those qualities within self. Queens, associated with Water: receptive counterpart to the kings are associated with element of water. Deep knowledge of their suit is turned inward, seek to perfect it in private world. Approach in life is to quietly express their suit and inspire others through their unwavering commitment to own evolution. Cardinals : queens : sometimes aggressive: signs that begin seasons, initiators, assertive, decisive

Queen of Wands: independent, easily excited, lively, feisty, determined, passionate, sincere.

Queen of Cups: sweet, empathetic, intuitive, compassionate, sensitive, soothing.

Queen of Swords: intelligent, guarded, sharp seductive, careful, reserved, mysterious

Queen of Pentacles: caretaker, loves familiar, patient, business saavy, nurturing

KNIGHTS (Fixed/Mutable)
Wands: Water & Fire
Pentacles: Fire & Earth
Swords: Earth & Air
Cups: Air & Water

It’s good to be able to recognize when you meet someone that is extremely enthusiastic about demonstrating the power of their suit. These characters are excited and devoted, but usually so eager to prove themselves to the world, that they tend to go to extremes. Think of the standard ‘hero’ archetype. They are often pretty memorable characters, with good intentions but the source of energy is their biggest weakness. Knights, associated with Fire can be described as filled with passion, represented by element of fire, itching for something to do, eager to prove self too eager, impatient too extremes. Knights: knights: signs in middle of seasons, stable, reliable, determined, sometimes stubborn

Knights of Wands: hot tempered, reckless, impulsive, don’t think things through, fearless.

Knights of Cups: moody, charming, dependent, romantic, idealist, follows heart, has trouble seeing reality.

Knights of Swords: aggressive, ambitious, sometimes manipulative, controlling.

Knights of Pentacles: responsible, hard working, finance and career driven, obsessive over finances.

SUITS (2 – 10): Decanates of each zodiac sign

Suit of Wands (Fire): Associated with creativity, willpower, and action.
Suit of Cups (Water): associated with feelings, relationships and love.
Suit of Swords (Air): associated with intellect, thoughts and ideas.
Suit of Pentacles (Earth): associated with finances, home, and body.

Cardinal (2,3,4)
Wands: Aries
Pentacles: Capricorn
Swords: Libra
Cups: Cancer

Fixed Signs (5,6,7)
Wands: Leo
Pentacles: Taurus
Swords: Aquarius
Cups: Scorpio

Mutable Signs (8,9,10)
Wands: Sagittarius
Pentacles: Virgo

MINOR ARCANA AND ASTROLOGY

The quality of the zodiac determines the numbered cards element, which determines the tarot suit. Look at correlations! Specifically the picture of which numbered cards are assigned to which zodiacs. Example is Aries, Cardinal, fire, element sign aka corresponds to 2,3,4 of wands.

Cards 2,3,4. Cardinal. Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn.
Considered initiators or leaders of zodiac and representative of respective seasons.

Cards 5,6,7. Fixed. Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius.
Reliable and stable, these signs are dedicated with strong follow through representative of the middle of their respective seasons.

Cards 8,9,10. Mutable. Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces.
Adaptable and versatile, which is representative of the end of their respective seasons.

Things to Know: Major Arcana

After your Major Arcana is known, you’ll look at what your Royal court cards are. These combine two different elements and qualities from the Zodiac signs next to each other. The Kings are chosen by the Cardinal/ Fixed signs with the suit chosen by their elements. Queens are Mutable and Cardinal with suits chosen by the element of the sign. Knights are Fixed and Mutable, again with the suits chosen by the zodiac signs’ element.

While all the types of tarot cards have an influence, not every card is useful. Every astrological sign will have a major arcana associated with it, as well as three suit cards. These are determined by the nature of your zodiac – whether it is fixed, mutable, or cardinal, as well as the element associated with it such as fire, water, air, and earth. This is the most basic information that you need to get started with a tarot horoscope reading.

To get the best results you should use Golden Dawn or Thoth tarot decks because these more closely align with the Chaldean planetary system that needs to be used to get the best reading. Chaldean forms of divination are some of the oldest in our human history, and when they looked up at the night sky they weren’t able to see all the planets we see now. So while modern astrology uses 10 planets, the Chaldean astrology you’ll want to use for a tarot horoscope has only seven.

Planets

Each planet has a corresponding day of the week. The moon is Monday, Mars is Tuesday, Mercury is Wednesday, Jupiter is Thursday, Venus is Friday, Saturday is Saturn and the Sun is Sunday. This is important for the tarot part of a horoscope tarot because the Chaldean Order is a key component to pairing the minor arcana with the astrological signs.

The last major piece that you’ll need to pull together is a zodiac wheel that shows the decans. Each sign of the zodiac takes up thirty degrees of the wheel. These thirty degrees are split into three equal size groups known as the decans (ten degrees each). Each decan represents 10 days of the year. These decans correspond to one of the suit cards from numbers two through ten cycling around the wheel based on the element of the sign. For example: Libra is an air sign. Air signs work with the Swords suit and the decans will work with cards 2, 3, and 4 of Swords. Next to Libra is Scorpio who is a Water sign and thus will use cups. As cards 2, 3, and 4 of Swords were used for Libra, Scorpio will look to cards 5, 6, and 7 of cups. This will continue with Sagittarius using the 8,9, and 10 of Wands and Capricorn using the  2, 3, and 4 of Pentacles until we are back at the next Air sign which is Aquarius. Libra used the 2, 3, and 4 of Swords and Aquarius will use 5, 6, and 7 of Swords. It is a system of circles within circles.

Zodiac Circle

The circle of the Zodiac is why it is so important to use the Chaldean Order and the Thoth tarot deck. The Circle is divided into rings. The innermost ring divides the circle into twelve segments each with one of the astrological signs in it. The second and third rings are split into three segments each. In the three segments of the second ring you will have the sequence of planetary rulers which is following the Chaldean Order of only seven planets instead of ten. It is also convenient to color them to coordinate with the element of the sign. In the last ring you have the layout of the pip cards from the tarot suits. Remember you are only using cards 2-10 for this ring.

When you are ready to do a tarot horoscope reading for yourself or someone else you’ll want to start with the largest elements and then work your way down from there. This means starting with the astrological sign and the Major Arcana associated with it. You’ll also want to set aside the royal cards of your minor arcana. Then you’ll want to look at whether your sign is Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable and make a note of which cards go with that quality before looking at the element of your sign. The Fire signs use Wands, the Water signs use Cups, the Air signs use Swords and the Earth signs use Pentacles. Set the Ace of each suit aside – it speaks for all the signs in the element and provides general insight. Then, at last, it will be time to build your wheel of the zodiac to look at your decans and planetary rulers. This will allow you to get more specific information from the cards of your suit.

The Tarot card even carries the lion in depiction. The Zodiac sign Leo is attributed with that quality. The Queen of Wands is the 2nd card in the elemental group of Fire and Leo stands in the mirror position for astrology as the  2nd Fire sign. The Lion tamer is an imagery of strength card that has obvious connotation with the Fixed Fire sign of Leo. This card invites us into arena to rumble with vulnerability.

Like the Hermit, Virgo seeks to shed the superficiality of the world and see the deeper, more spiritual side to life. Both will look for a quiet place of study and introspection as they seek their true voice. The solitary journey into the depths is one that is undertaken to explore what is neglected. The goal is to find authentic purpose in a world that can focus too much on the superficial. The Hermit searches for time to introspect and discover his true voice and lead others.

When he retreats to explore mysteries of the inner life, he becomes open and innocent like a child. The Hermit is associated with Virgo. When Tarot and astrology combine, this is interesting as Virgo is associated to the concept of Virginity. It’s a metaphorical state through a more representative view of the purity that can be found in being alone. It is a time to be in one’s thoughts analyzing the lessons in the quest for perfection. The Queen of Pentacles is the 2nd of the Earth elemental groups in Tarot and is matched by Virgo as an astrological 2nd Earth sign. It is no surprise that mutable hardworking Virgo’s are associated with the hermit for the inner discipline they possess in order to achieve enlightenment.

This sign will work their way through whatever difficulties get in the way. The Tarot card Temperance is a card of balance, striving for enlightenment, a philosophical tempering if you will. The Astrological sign of Sagittarius is symbolic of very same themes. Both Temperance and Sagittarius are embodiments of searching out into the environment in order to refine what has been learned prior. The connection between Sagittarius and Page of Wands is like the ones before posed in matching placements, both representing the 2nd fire elemental grouping. They are a blend of duality, just like their fellow mutable signs. As explorers of the zodiac, they are consistently striving for the alchemic balance of traveling and staying home, turning up and going to bed early.

Sign: Capricorn
Major Arcana: The Devil
The sensual, strong and stable Capricorn is all too easily chained by their own fears and self-loathing. Once they learn that they are the jailers and they hold the keys to their freedom they can set themselves loose. The Devil causes a feeling of being chained and bonded to earthly. This is the relationship of humanity to their shadow, for Capricorn learns their charms are supported through fears and illusions that they let dominate them. When these bonds they carry are removed, their true selves are playful and sensual. They are creatures who embody strength and stability.

King of Swords (Capricorn/Aquarius)
Queen of Pentacles (Sagittarius/ Capricorn)

The Devil encourages you to face your shadow self in order to gather the knowledge necessary for spiritual transformation. This card advises you to reflect on the negativity that has made you doubt yourself, swap it for confidence and hold fast to highest vision of who you are. The Devil card has hard misconceptions, it tends to create anxiety when its drawn in a reading. This card is more symbolic of desires and striving for fulfillment of cravings of all types. Of course, not all cravings are healthy especially when a person is single minded focusing on them, such as drinking or smoking. Capricorn is connected to devil card because both card and sign strive ever onward for those things that will satisfy their drives. This could be acquiring goods or business conquests; the connection represents those things that may slowly take over one’s life and not necessarily to an overall benefit. The Page of Pentacles is connected to Capricorn as representative of the 3rd of earth signs for astrology and Tarot elemental group. Capricorns are associated with earthly success orientation.

This card focuses on your optimism. When you wish on stars, you really believe you can achieve your heart’s desires. It is your job in this world to convince others they can too, thereby helping to lead them home in a spiritual sense. This is a wonderful card for association with Aquarius; as we can see the symbol of pouring water from vessel into a larger body of water. Aquarius and the Star are both ‘water bearers’ in the symbolic sense. Both the sign Aquarius and Star are connected with same themes. They show that standing out from the crowd, being original and going with flow is entirely possible to integrate together. The Page of Swords is a tarot card associated with Aquarius for the position they both share as the 3rd air sign placements. The Star’s imagery shows a water-bearer gathering sustenance for the community under the night sky. Aquarius, who act as humanitarians of the zodiac, offer their strategic, inspirational help. The Fixed sign has adapted themselves to offer more airy skills, like building technology.

Advice: The Moon asks us to evaluate the undercurrent of our subconscious to tap into our intuitive flow.

Like the Moon card, the Pisces is a creature of every-changing moods. They do best when they are attune to nature’s cycles and use them to refresh intuitive powers. The Moon rules emotions, which are a strong suit, especially when you use your compassionate nature to help others. The Astrological sign Pisces is associated with the Moon tarot card. Both are symbolic representations of dreams and illusions. Mysteries of the depths of the ocean and movement of tides as in emotions,  emotional reactions and processes are themes for both. Tarot card is the page of Cups and connected to sign of Pisces. Both have a shared connection to being third placements for the water elemental group. The Moon rules the tides of the ocean, emotions, fish; like Pisces. This zodiac sign is charming, creative, and empathetic, often going with the flow. Which can also mean getting caught up in underflow.
